MENA Newswire News Desk: Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Germany are increasingly dominated by sports utility vehicles (SUVs), with 51% of all new BEV registrations in the first two-thirds of the year being SUVs, according to government data reported by the German news agency dpa. Including off-road vehicles, the figure rises to nearly 55%, signaling a clear preference among German consumers for larger electric models.

In stark contrast, smaller BEV models, including compact and small cars, accounted for just under 26% of new electric vehicle registrations. The data, published by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), shows that larger vehicles are outperforming smaller ones by a significant margin in the transition to electric mobility. SUVs are also more prevalent in the electric vehicle sector than in the broader automotive market. Combined, SUVs and off-road vehicles represent nearly 41% of all new vehicle registrations in Germany, according to the KBA report.

Automotive expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer attributes the growing popularity of electric SUVs to consumer preferences and the design advantages these models offer. He noted that anyone introducing a new vehicle today would be smart to launch it as an SUV, given the strong demand. He further explained that electric SUVs are better suited to house large battery packs due to their higher ground clearance and spacious design, making them an ideal fit for the BEV market.

Dudenhöffer’s analysis underscores a broader trend in the automotive industry, where consumers increasingly favor the versatility and comfort offered by SUVs, especially in the growing electric vehicle market. This shift could shape future strategies for automakers, who may prioritize developing new BEV models that cater to this demand for larger vehicles.
